The Joanie Stories

Anybody out there remember curling up with the Little House on the Prairie books? Trixie Belden? The Sugar Creek Gang? There was something so sweet about the lives of these children–they were smart, industrious, friendly, and free-range! Encyclopedia Brown, Anne of Green Gables, my childhood role model, Pippi Longstocking, or my mom’s favorite, the girls from Dandelion Cottage! All of these children roamed the hills and streets of their towns, observing the mundane activities of the adults around then, navigating mysteries, and wayfinding paths into their readers’ hearts.

From that tradition comes The Joanie Stories by my pastor, David Hegg. Twelve-year-old Joanie and her cousins and friends saddle up their horses in 1878 Kansas, finding adventure on the prairies as they engage with their families, other homesteaders, and townsfolk. Each story brings to life the comradery of developing friendships as the kids work hard at home, help their neighbors, and learn lessons about the abiding love and provision of God for each of them. Along the way, they enjoy the world around them and earn how to care for each other, including the unpleasant people in their midst.

Whether you are looking for a wholesome book to hand to a child or for your next read-aloud to your classroom or family, The Joanie Stories is an enjoyable choice!
