Yesterday I posted the first part of a list of some of the most influential books in my life.  It seems that many of my readers remembered best the works of Patricia St. John, the British nurse who worked for years in Morocco.  Her own story is told in this book.   Here is the rest of my list:

6. Essential Writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I remember buying this text when I was a missionary in Alaska, around 1995. I had very little money, and I found this 600 page book for about $10 from CBD. Even though I had never heard of this man, it seemed like a good stewardship to pay less for more… And was it ever!

7. Leading With Love. This book from Alex Strauch works through I Corinthians 13 in the life of a leader. I have read this book half a dozen times in the last dozen years.

8. Valley of Vision. This collection of Puritan Prayers travels with me everywhere.  Now available for Kindle!!!

9. Letters of John Newton.  John Newton was a tender pastor, and as I have I have read through this tome twice in the last five years, the letters and sermons from the pen of this 300 year-old shepherd have soothed my soul and challenged me to look to the Savior. Amazingly, though he lost his memory and his sight at the end of his life, he still remembered, “I am a great sinner, and He is a great Savior.” Amazing Grace!

10. Wrestling with an Angel and Eight Twenty-Eight. These two books have come into my life within the last three years. Both tell the story of people who love someone who has a disability–a dad with his adopted son and a wife who married her husband after his traumatic brain injury. The grace of God is on display, and this God embraces the unlovely, the messy, the fractured, which is good news because that means…me!
