A Prayer in Light of a Coming Election

Our Father in heaven, Almighty, Lord of Hosts,

Hear the prayer of your child, Oh Lord.

I am a pilgrim in this land where You have placed me. You have ultimately made me for a different Kingdom, yet You have ordained that I should, for Your glory and my good, live in this place at this troubled juncture in history.

Teach me to be less concerned for my own welfare than for Your rule. Give me guidance as I seek the welfare of this place and this community for Your sake. Make me a fit ambassador to represent You.

Remind me to pray for the leaders You have placed (and will place) in power, for You have commanded it to be so. You, Creator of all, hold their hearts and turn them wherever You will.

Give me a heart of compassion for those who pursue wickedness. Set a guard on my tongue when I am tempted to critique and demean others for their words or choices. Help me to see that the arrogant and the foolish need you.

Let my disappointments be tempered by trust that You are still on the universe’s throne.

In all, Lord, may my life serve as a signpost to Your kindness, to Your righteousness, and to Your invitation for all to come to You.

May I find rest in You alone, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords.

Amen.
